THE POWDER AND THE GLORY :: Cosmetic rivalry

If you haven’t had the opportunity to see the PBS documentary The Powder and the Glory, check your local library or your PBS listings. It’s an excellent look at the cosmetic industry in the United States, and how Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden influenced the country. Don’t worry, it doesn’t get bogged down in rivalry of which cream did what; it’s actually a capitalist view of entrepreneurship, marketing, and culture. What I liked best of all was the collection of ads and graphics, which I have chosen to share with you. Enjoy!

"Do you want sweet breath? Saturate a lump of sugar with perfume and eat it before you go out to an evening party."

— Make-Up by Virginia Vincent, 1932
